FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Find clear answers to common questions about our electrical repairs, safety inspections, and installations for your home or business.

WHAT IS AN EICR?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) checks the condition and safety of the electrical installation in a property. It can identify damage, deterioration and other issues that may need attention.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED AN EICR?

How often an EICR is needed depends on the property and how it is used. In England, privately rented homes generally require an electrical inspection at least every five years, although an earlier inspection may be recommended.

WHAT DO C1, C2 AND C3 MEAN ON AN EICR?

C1 means there is danger present and immediate action is required. C2 means there is a potentially dangerous issue requiring urgent remedial action. C3 means improvement is recommended but is not classed as immediately or potentially dangerous.

DO I NEED TO FIX C1 AND C2 ISSUES ON AN EICR?

C1 and C2 observations identify safety issues that require action. For rented properties, landlords also have legal responsibilities regarding electrical safety and remedial work following an inspection.

WHY DOES MY FUSE BOX OR CONSUMER UNIT KEEP TRIPPING?

Repeated tripping can be caused by a faulty appliance, overloaded circuit, wiring fault or another electrical problem. If it keeps happening, an electrician should investigate the cause rather than repeatedly resetting it.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF A SOCKET OR SWITCH IS GETTING HOT?

Stop using it and arrange for it to be checked. Heat, burning smells, discolouration, buzzing or crackling can indicate an electrical fault and should not be ignored.
